“Your hearing loss is more noticeable than your hearing aid. Lets do something about it!”

Did you know that one in three people age 65 or older experiences some degree of hearing loss? Hearing loss is a natural part of aging – in fact, one of the causes is presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). Another cause is exposure to noise, which causes noise-induced hearing loss. Often times, noise-induced hearing loss occurs due to occupational hazards from working in loud industries.
Orange City, FL is also home to large number of veterans, serving in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Approximately 60% of veterans returning from combat zones have reported cases of hearing loss and/or tinnitus (a ringing of the ears), due to exposure to loud sound in the field. Ear to Hear is proud to offer hearing health care to the veterans in our community.
Whether it’s age-related or noise-induced, it’s important to keep a look out for the signs of hearing loss. Because hearing loss is an invisible condition, it’s difficult to identify at first. For this reason, hearing specialists recommend that people begin taking annual hearing tests at the age of 50 – which happens to be the median age of residents in Orange City! Even if a hearing loss is not detected, having your audiogram on record helps you remain aware of your hearing abilities year by year.
At Ear to Hear in Orange City, we offer free hearing evaluations. This simple, painless test will gauge your hearing abilities and give you important information on your hearing health.
Most occupations require clear communication. With untreated hearing loss, speech recognition becomes difficult and can lead to difficulties in communication.
Studies have shown that people with untreated hearing loss have lower earning power than their colleagues with normal hearing or their colleagues who treat their hearing loss with hearing aids. The benefits of treating hearing loss extend far beyond a paycheck as well.
For many older Americans, untreated hearing loss can be an incredibly isolating experience. Studies from Finland have shown that older people with untreated hearing loss have a limited “life space,” meaning they are not confident to move around as much in their neighborhood as do people with normal hearing.
Furthermore, social isolation could contribute to a greater risk for developing depression and anxiety. Additionally, social isolation could contribute to an increased risk for dementia, as does leaving hearing loss untreated. Studies from Johns Hopkins University have found links between untreated hearing loss and diminished cognitive abilities, which could increase the risk for dementia.
